In the latest air suspension System on the Mercedes Benz Side, an active damping system meets modern air suspension. The results of such a procedure can only be noted as positive. The meeting of the damping system with the air suspension enables the intelligent comfort chassis to adapt to both bumpy and slippery roads. But the positive aspect of such a collision is not only the adaptation to the road, but also the general safe driving stability, which is made possible by the soft basic suspension of the Airmatic air suspension system. The latest air suspension system from Mercedes also provides a high level of driving comfort for every situation, as the damping on each wheel is regulated independently. In addition, separate adjustment of the rebound and compression stages of the Airmatic air suspension system results in lower shifting noise.

 

How does the Airmatic air suspension system from Mercedes Benz work?

The Airmatic air suspension system works with four different damping levels (ADS II), which automatically adjust the damping force at each wheel. By adjusting the damping force, the car is able to maintain a certain stability on the road. The system's air springs can be adjusted to be either harder or softer depending on the driving situation. This means that if the driver prefers a sporty driving style, the air springs automatically become harder. However, it is also possible to adjust the suspension and damping manually using the gear stick.

 

Operating the Airmatic air suspension system

In order to operate the Airmatic air suspension system in a simple and uncomplicated way, the driver has the possibility to control the system with the Agility Select program using a controller located in the center console of the car. The Agility Select program has four different driving programs, the "comfort mode", the "sport", the "sport + mode" and last but not least the "ECO mode". These four different driving options offer the driver variety and fun while driving. The usual standard setting of the Agility Select program is the driving program "Comfort". However, if the driver wants more agility and dynamics on the road, the Sport mode is just right for him.

 

Level control

The level control is a system with which the height of the car can be kept constant, can be raised, but can also be lowered. Such a level control system is mainly used for changing load conditions in order to maintain optimum ground clearance. For this reason, such a procedure is usually carried out on vehicles with a high registration capacity (e.g. estate car). If a level control system is installed in a vehicle, both the ground clearance of the vehicle and the overall height will change. This means that all vehicle axles are equipped with height adjustments. If the vehicle is raised by a level control, the vehicle is able to drive over certain obstacles. However, if the vehicle is lowered, it is made easier for the driver to drive under obstacles. The installation of a levelling device is to be noted positively for the vehicle owner and for the vehicle itself. The installation of a level control automatically improves the suspension travel, which at the same time optimises the suspension behaviour. This optimisation results in lower lateral sensitivity and improved road holding. In addition, the braking distance is shortened by the optimal brake pressure. Furthermore, the load ratio between the front and rear axle is optimised, which reduces tyre wear both front and rear.
